My Grandpa was a pilot,
My Grandma was a nurse,
But my dad made the big money.
He was the guy who drove the hearse.

The Family That Fights Together

Memorial Day
Today we honor those who died
By doing what they would have done.
We barbecue and drink a few
And hopefully sit in the sun.
And perhaps you visit some graves
And leave your flowers, coins, or tears
To remember the brave who served
Over many hundreds of years.
But we also ought to recall
The causes that lead to each war.
Ask if the state of our nation
Was what all those headstones fought for.

Alaska
I walk among
the snowy trees
Enveloped by
a chilling breeze.
I see a moose
among the arbors
And wonder what
secrets it harbors.
I brush my hand
against the branches
And remember a war
fought in the tranches.
The bullets flew,
The blood rained red
‘Til everyone but me
Was dead.
So I look at the moose
Who’ll never fight
A war he don’t
Believe is right.
I envy him,
The big dumb deer,
And I know I’ll live
My life out here,
Never alone
Among the trees.
I’ll always have
The memories.
