Somewhere, A Lawyer Is Crying

If you never wear black clothes

And walk through parking lots at night

While making deep eye contact

With your cell phone, you just might

Never get to call your lawyer

And get ten-mil in compensation

For no reason other than

Having your legs lose all sensation.

Today, In America

The family was gathered,

The chicken was frying,

And somewhere on TV

Our leaders were lying.

I was lighting the fireworks

And feeling just fine

‘Til I held up my fingers

And counted to nine.

The Diving Contest

Ten-dollar swimsuit,

Twelve silver rungs,

Six feet of diving board,

Twelve-foot deep water,

Four-hundred cheering fans,

Two feet too far left,

Five nights at the hospital,

Countless memories.

The Color of Night

Night fell and bruised his arm
One sunny day in June.
Day was running of light
And night had to take over soon.

Night was very nervous
And he asked “What shall I do?”
As it turns out, no one cared at all
That night was black and blue.
