Playing With A Too-Full Deck

The young bet on clubs

And slowly lose their mind.

The grown bet on diamonds

And what they seek, they find.

The old bet on spades

And in time all follow suit.

For those who bet on hearts

Best be rich, or else be cute.

Yet I drew five jokers…

I’m either destined for greatness

Or I bet on too many clubs.

The Cards Started Strong

Some of my friends are Hearts,

Full of love and kind and soft.

Other friends are Diamonds,

All rich and perfectly coiffed.

Some of my friends are Clubs

‘Cause they’re blunt and like to drink.

But I don’t yet know any Spades

Or anything relevant that rhymes with drink.

Eight of Diamonds

There are 54 cards in a deck,

And only twelve are royalty.

I feel sorry for the folks

Who are stuck as a two or a three.
I wondered what card I was:

I’ve not the talent to be an ace,

And I’m really not a joker.

Would I ever find my place?
And then strolling down the sidewalk

I found eight diamonds on the ground,

So I sold them. Now I’m rich

And I don’t worry about this crap anymore.

Queens

The Queen of Clubs
And the Queen of Spades
Chatted as they
Put their hair in braids.

“How come,” they asked
“Aren’t we diamonds or hearts?
We represent tools
And bludgeoning parts.”

“I’m not unhappy,”
Said the queen of clubs.
“I represent parties,
And bars and pubs.”

But the Queen of Spades
Was not amused.
“For what good
Am I ever used?

“In a game of hearts I’m worth
All the other hearts combined.
I’m an old, dark-haired lady,”
The Queen of Spades whined.

Then in walked Jack Spade
Gazing with his one eye,
And when put in perspective
Everything felt alrigh’
