Whether people treat you badly
Or whether they treat you fine
Is directly correlated
To your possession of a spine.
Whether people treat you badly
Or whether they treat you fine
Is directly correlated
To your possession of a spine.

Today I’m writing poems
To folks I’ve never met
Because the woman that I love
Has not existed yet.
Why I am alone tonight
I surely understand,
But no man can be lonely
When he has his own right hand.

Somebody said: Let’s make a shoe
That doesn’t have to be tied,
That you can wear for a night on the town
Or when on a horse you ride
That’s made from an alligator’s flesh
And comes with loud, stabby heels,
Plus make it the only kind of shoe
For which there are no online deals!

With persiflage they pledged
To be true what was alleged.
With mockery they both
Laid down their sacred oath.
She had money on the mind;
He had eyes on her behind.
Thus, with one all-sealing kiss
Began six days of wedded bliss.

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
That dress is fine
For cosplaying Shamu.

A hero stood and spoke the truth,
Was called unwise, uncool, uncouth,
Was thrown out by the ruling men
But in the streets he spoke again.
His home was burned, his name was mocked,
His faith was tested, his world was rocked.
He was left penniless in shame
But when he spoke, he spoke the same.
He watched as liars took control,
Saw how untruths extract their toll.
The Earth collapsed beneath a word,
While the truth was spoken, yet unheard.
Left with no ground to stand upon,
When everything he loved was gone,
The Earth was ash, but still he stood;
He was the only one who would.
But from the ash a flower grew,
A cloud allowed the sunshine through,
A bird sang out a cheerful song
And the hero saw that he was wrong:
Life was good, so broken-hearted
The hero silently departed.

You want to be listened to
Instead of overheard.
You want a conversation
And not just have a word.
You want to celebrate your life
Instead of just staying alive
And because you know the difference
I know someday you’ll thrive.

If a thing is worth the work
Required to do it well
Then it is also worth the time
To be lousy as Hell.
If you hunt and fight and sing
And miss and lose and cry
You’ve far surpassed the many
Who were too afraid to try.
The losers of the universe
Die proudly in the sand,
Pleased to bear their battle scars
With dirt upon their hand.
There are no failures in the world
Of doing what’s worthwhile,
For both the best and all the rest
Have earned the right to smile.

I’ve heard you call me lazy,
Saying I get nothing done,
That I’m pale as a potato
‘Cause I’m never in the sun,
That I show up late for everything
And don’t talk very much
And I try to be romantic
But I just seem out of touch.
What I haven’t heard you saying
Is how still my mind can be
And softly sitting in the dark
I’m happy as can be,
That I fight to leave the comfort
That being lonely can afford
And how loving normal people
Often tends to make me bored.
You talk about the negatives
I often demonstrate.
I admit, of course, I do them
But I do them without hate.
I’m a champion of stillness
And a friend to every stress
And what you call “being nobody”
Is what I call success.
